NEWS from Nurse Kat:

Now that it’s October, we’re officially entering what I like to call the "low vitamin d, high stress and too much sugar season”. I know, it's a mouth full! Halloween through Easter which is about six months of treat-based holidays. It’s such a fun time of year, but it’s also when we tend to see more colds and flus making their way around.

I want to remind everyone that sugar can actually suppress the immune system, which makes it harder for our bodies (and our students’ bodies!) to fight off those seasonal bugs. Kids can tolerate no more than about 24 grams of sugar a day, but with sweet breakfasts, flavored milk, juices, and all the white carbs for meals on top of class treats, that number can easily double or triple!

Sugar enters the cells through the same “door” as Vitamin C. However, it enters more easily than Vitamin C. In other words, it takes the place of Vitamin C in our bodies, which inhibits our immune system from doing its job.

Reminder! All students must have required vaccines or an approved exemption to attend school. This is especially important for Pre-K, 7th, and 12th grade students. Free immunizations are available through SFPS, with walk-in clinics on July 25, July 30, and August 6.

¡Recordatorio!
