SFPS budget primer for 2021-2022
As SFPS builds its budget for the 2021-2022 school year, look for several benefits for students and staff:
  • A 1.5% salary increase for instructional and non-instructional personnel is legislatively required
  • The SFPS Board of Education has expressed its support for covering insurance premium changes, which are pending NMPSIA Board approval and take effect on October 1st. The high options plan will see a 6% increase and the low options plan will see a 3.6% increase.
  • The new legislatively approved Family Income Index may help fund programs like art, music, PE, special education, etc. The index responds toYazzie/Martinez lawsuit findings that New Mexico’s public education system has failed to provide a constitutionally sufficient education for at-risk students. SFPS was a plaintiff district in the lawsuit.
The budget is being built on 11,590 students, which is 615 fewer students than this school year. Next year's operational budget impact is projected to be $7.1 million.
The SFPS Board of Education's next meeting on the budget will be on May 20th. (At the Board's meeting on May 6th a budget update is on the agenda.) The budget is due to the New Mexico Public Education Department (PED) on June 1st.

May 17 is the deadline to file your taxes for 2020! Parents or caregivers may be eligible for up to $3,600 per child through the new child tax credit resulting from the recent federal COVID-19 American Rescue Plan.
You are eligible for the full amount if:
  • You are a single tax filer, and make an annual gross income of $75,000 or less
  • You are a head of household, and make an annual gross income of $112,500 or less
  • You are a couple filing jointly, and make an annual gross income of $150,000 or less
  • You do not need an annual income of at least $2,500 to qualify for the refund, unlike previous child tax credits.
Please note, if you are eligible you will need to file for 2020 to receive this credit, even If you do not normally file a tax return.
Parents or caregivers can receive up to $3,600 per child under 6 (including newborns born in 2021) and up to $3,000 for children older than 6 up to age 17. Since the credit includes newborns born in 2021, families will need to update their information through a new IRS portal, set to open in July, or they can file a claim on their 2021 taxes.
Money from the credit will be split: Half will be paid through a tax refund and the other half will be paid monthly from July to December.
Additional information about this tax credit can be found here.
